What are the biggest
complaints you hear about self tanner? (And fixes)
1. My self-tanning lotion looks unnatural and
orange. Choosing the right color is
very important. No matter what your skin color or what shade you choose the best
way to fix this problem is with proper application. For me proper application
means diluting the product with moisturizer, by mixing your self-tanner with
moisturizer before applying, it will give you a more gradual application of
color (allowing it to look more natural). Also, it will make it much easier to
apply evenly.
2. My elbows, knees and ankles are darker than
the rest of my body. The best way
to prevent this is to make sure and exfoliate your body really well before
applying your color. Make sure and concentrate on your problem areas when
exfoliating. The reason your elbows, knees and ankles can take darker and more
color is that this is where you usually have some drier patches of skin. If we
do not remove the dry skin before we self-tan it will absorb more product than
other places making these areas take darker.
3. My palms and knuckles are dark and stained
after application. There are two
ways to prevent and fix this problem. 1.You can prevent this by wearing gloves
while applying. The best gloves to use are gloves used by hair color
professionals, so just go to your local beauty supply store. Latex gloves
usually fit the best, which will help you when applying, the better they fit the
easier it will be for you to control. When you finish, remove the gloves and
carefully apply a tiny bit of the product to the back of your hands so they
match the rest of your body. 2.Fix it by washing your hand immediately after
application, really really well. You can also help by applying hand lotion
before you begin your application. This way your skin is less likely to absorb
the tanning product.
What is your favorite type
of self tanner and why?
Mary Kay Sun Essentials Sunless Tanning Lotion;
affordable, perfect for those women who do not want to take time to purchase
because someone delivers it to your home, amazing color (very natural, no
orange), wears really well and as it fades the color does not appear streaky. I
have even made women prove to me that it was not a real tan because the color
looked so real!!!
Are there any celebrities
you’ve used self tanner on?
Yes Sheryl Crow, she always likes to have a
great glow to her skin. It makes her feel healthy and as if she has an amazing
glow. Also the Dixie Chicks have to have a tan, they are from Texas after
all. Those are just to name a few.
What is the best process,
step-by-step, for applying self tanner?
I personally feel that most times when using
self-tanning lotion it can look fake, so I like to mix it with moisturizer to
slowly build the color, which will make it look more natural. Here is the best
way to achieve natural looking, smooth and even coverage when applying
self-tanning lotion:
1. Exfoliate well. Every part of your body,
especially elbows, knees and ankles. This will help your self-tanning lotion go
on more evenly. If you do not exfoliate all the drier areas of skin it will grab
more color and cause uneven color.
2. Moisturize your skin to even out its
porosity (your skin’s ability to hold moisture). The more you moisturize the
more evenly your self-tanning lotion will apply.
3. For the body: Mix 2 parts
self-tanner with 1 part moisturizer. Make sure to pour your self-tanner and
moisturizer into a bowl and mix them completely together before you start. Do
not try to mix the two in your hands as you apply it—the solution will not go on
evenly. If you are very fair, you might want to mix 1 part self-tanning lotion
with 1 part moisturizer to make it even more subtle.
4. For the face: Mix equal parts
self-tanning lotion with moisturizer to dilute it, and apply it to your face
over a period of days. If you are very fair, you might want to mix 2 parts
moisturizer with 1 part self-tanning lotion to make it even more subtle. I
recommend doing this gradually over a period of time instead of in one
application, so your skin will get a slow build-up of color and appear more
natural. If you have any dark spots, make sure you apply something like Vaseline
or a very thick moisturizer to the spot before you apply the self-tanning
lotion; this will prevent it from taking color or darkening as the rest of your
skin tans.
Also, the closer the time in-
between applications; the deeper the color will be. In order to maintain the
color; you need to re-apply about every five to seven days to insure the color
will stay the same.
How can you reach
hard-to-reach spots, like the back?
I wish I had a miracle answer for this, but I
have to say the absolute best way is to find a partner to tan with. That way you
can assure that you get flawless application on you back. One possibility would
be to purchase a back scrubber for the shower and cover the head with multiple
latex gloves. Make sure and if you think the head of the brush is too abrasive
you could slip multiple gloves on to prevent the head form pushing through. Also
make sure to look in a mirror while applying to make sure you are getting it
even. Also, if you are using a product that has no immediate color, since it is
hard to see you could mix a bit of an instant bronzer (a product that you use to
give you temporary color that washes off) so you can see how much and where you
are putting it.
What’s your favorite lip
balm that has SPF in it? Why?
Mary Kay Lip Protector
Sunscreen SPF 15. It is my favorite because it moisturizes beautifully while
protecting your lips. Also, it works perfectly under all lip color (lipstick,
gloss, etc.).
I hope that all of you getting an advanced look at this article
will help you encourage your customers that a fake tan is so much
better than trying to get the real thing! The sun is our skins enemy!
